The Rivalry Between the Jets and the Patriots Continues

If you’re a New Yorker you won’t want to miss Thursday Night Football this week as the Jets are set to take on the New England Patriots. It’s the first matchup of the year for the two rivals who have been at it for years.

If you’re a football fan, there is no denying that the Patriots have basically dominated the AFC East, winning the division 11 of the past 13 seasons and the Super Bowl three times under the head coach, Bill Belichick. That being said, things have also been somewhat interesting for the Jets since Rex Ryan took over as head coach back in 2009. He openly admitted he came to the US to “win” and not kiss “Bill Belichick’s rings.” This is exactly around the time the rivalry between the two teams started.

Ryan put his money where his mouth was and brought the Jets to the AFC Championship game in his first two years as head coach with Mark Sanchez as quarterback. After the 2010 season, Sanchez started a downward spiral and ended up bringing Ryan down with him. Jet’s haven’t had a winning season since then.

On the other hand, Bilichick and Brady have continued to dominate the division every year, leaving the Jets hopeless and Ryan’s job security up in the air. Geno Smith who was drafted last year took over for Sanchez and showed a promising lead however he ended up digressing this year and the Jets are off to a 1-5 start. The Jets are coming into the game quite desperate and looking for a win.

The Jets previously looked better as a team this past Sunday when they held Peyton Manning and the Broncos offense in check for most of the game. Down by only a touchdown in the final minutes of the game, Smith’s play fell short with an interception that was returned for a game-ending touchdown Although the Jets lost again, they definitely showed improvements and gave fans hope for a salvaged season.

The Patriots may have an easy win on their hands, especially considering they seem to be in the middle of a hot streak but the rivalry between the two teams is exactly what the Jets might need to turn their season around.
